“Managing master data is more complex than you think”
Ben Teunissen has been an independent Enterprise Data Architect for five years and joined The Future Group, a network of independent entrepreneurs in IT. He also sits on a number of DAMA working groups. This allows him to maintain a broad perspective and keep in touch with his peers in other organizations.
Why did you take the special training course on Reference & Master Data? “This training course covers a topic that comes up very, very often. Being able to manage reference and master data properly is one of the qualities you need, and it is also one of the topics where many mistakes are made. It seems simple, but it is a challenge to do it right.
My next special is the use of metadata. Metadata to control processes is rapidly emerging, for example when you want to personalize something.
I first took the Fundamentals training course to be able to put things in place and am now taking a number of specials. Because of its direct applicability, I chose the training course on Reference & Master Data first.”
Why did you choose the Connected Data Academy? “I had already taken the Fundamentals training and was very enthusiastic, especially about the trainers. They have earned their spurs in this field and really provide a lot of depth. They provoke discussions, which I enjoy the most. I can also gain knowledge from a book, but you learn the most from talking to colleagues who, because of their different backgrounds, look at an issue differently.”
What did you think of the quality of the Reference & Master Data special? “The training gives you a good insight into the complexity involved in this subject. It protects you from making mistakes. I was also very enthusiastic about the trainer. He gives the theoretical knowledge a practical dimension by discussing issues. As far as I’m concerned, they could add a little more theoretical knowledge about reference and master data to the training, for example by recommending a number of specific books. Then it would be absolutely perfect!”
